Science Under Sail Australia

Our vessel

RV Velella is a 12m sailing catamaran that can sleep up to 10 people. It provides an amazing liveaboard experience for small groups.

RV Velella circumnavigated Australia in 2012/13 and sailed to the Solomon Islands and Lord Howe Island.

Most of the time she operates along Queensland’s east coast undertaking habitat surveys in one of Queensland’s Marine Parks (Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, Great Sandy Marine Park, Moreton Bay Marine Park).

RV Velella can take a total of 24 people (22 passengers + 2 crew) for day trips in ‘smooth and partially smooth waters’ or 10 people on overnight trips or when operating in the open ocean (2C commercial registration).

RV Velella has 4 double cabins, 2 heads (toilets) and a galley suitable for preparing meals for large groups and a saloon area that can accommodate up to 12 people for a meal, computer work or games.

There is also plenty of deck space for people to sleep under the stars if they choose to.
