Science Under Sail Australia

Great Barrier Reef Expeditions

Each year since 2019 we have been conducting trips from Bundaberg to Cairns in August-October to survey benthic habitats along the GBR coast. Please stay tuned for updates and contact us if you are interested to participate.

We survey the seagrass and coral habitats of the Great Barrier Reef with the student crew who will help us sail Velella and collect the data. In 2020, due to the pandemic, we were allowed to have a limited number of people on board. We adapted to this situation by creating a virtual experience through a video blog and a series of social media posts that transmitted our research and trip progress to those who were not able to participate. You can find the full GBR 2020 video blog on our YouTube channel here.
